This video lecture from Aliphatic Hydrocarbons (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers reactions of alkanes including combustion, oxidation and nitration. Heat of combustion is discussed for complete combustion in the presence of oxygen along with the use of combustion of gasoline (an alkane) in internal combustion engines. Oxidation in limited supply of oxygen yields carbon monoxide instead along with carbon black which is very hazardous. Catalytic oxidation yields alcohols, Aldehydes and carboxylic acids in a red hot copper tube. Reaction with nitric acid substitutes hydrogen with the nitro group yielding nitro methane or nitro alkanes. Very interesting facts about this nitro methane are also discussed at the end.
