Dense smog engulfed the Chinese capital, Beijing and a large swathe of northern and eastern China for a fifth day in a row. Data from the US embassy put levels of PM2.5 particles at 405 in the capital as of 1 pm local time. PM 2.5 refers to particles measuring less than 2.5 micrometres across and is the most noxious form of air pollution.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers levels above 300 to be hazardous.
