This video lecture from Aliphatic Hydrocarbons (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the Kolbe’s electrolysis which is extension of the previous lecture on the preparation of saturated hydrocarbons i.e. alkanes by the Decarboxylation or the removal of carbon dioxide from a hydrocarbon containing a carboxyl group –COOH. Sodium or potassium salts of Monocarboxylic acids (with single –COOH group) are electrolyzed in an aqueous solution where carbon dioxide is removed from the negative ion at anode yielding a longer chain alkane followed by the formation of sodium hydroxide at the cathode. This method is helpful in elongating or extending the carbon chain. Multiple products (alkanes) are also possible to yield by electrolysis of two different salts.
