In most cases, a Retirement community is a housing complex, either of private homes or apartments, designed for older adults who are completely independent and able to care for themselves. In many Retirement Communities activities are offered with varying degrees of participation within the community. While Retirement Communities have different meanings to different people, some typical characteristics are: the community is age restricted (55 +), residents are partially or fully retired and the community offers shared services or amenities.
There are different names for these Retirement Communities or Retirement Homes some examples are; Independent living (Over 55 communities), Leisure and Lifestyle Oriented Communities (LORC's) like golf communities , Assisted Livings, Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC's) and Residential Care Homes ( RCH).
Most people choose Retirement Communities when they are still active and independent, when they are looking to downsize or move to a community with other people close to their age who have common interests. For seniors who are active and in the beginning stages of retirement (55 and over), moving to an over 55 retirement community or a golfing community could be a good fit. Staying active and surrounding yourself with other active, like minded peers can be beneficial for your physical and emotional health.
