A Volkswagen Beetle had been reported stolen in Tennessee way back in 1974. On January 30th, CBP authorities recovered it when carrying out a thorough document check on the car.

All too often, stolen vehicles are never recovered. Once in a while, however, missing cars resurface. That’s exactly what happened in Detroit.

A 1965 Volkswagen Beetle recently made an appearance in the city. The auto had been reported stolen in Tennessee way back in 1974.

On January 30th, Authorities from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection or CBP for short, made the discovery when carrying out a thorough document check on the car.

National Insurance Crime Bureau agents cooperated with CBP and helped confirm the Beetle matched information reported to Knoxville police regarding a stolen auto from four decades earlier.

It is not yet known if anyone will face charges for the vehicle theft, but it was mentioned that the Beetle was being shipped from Michigan to Finland. CBP officials have seized the car and all parts that were sent for its restoration.

Following the retrieval, the Acting Port Director Marty Raybon boasted just a little, stating ‘Part of safeguarding our nation is to make sure that all exports are legitimate and lawful. Recovering a vehicle reported stolen 40 years ago is a testament to the vigilance and attention to detail on the part of CBP.’
