Lokayukta police on Wednesday conducted simultaneous raids on the offices of the excise department in the city and seized unaccounted cash worth Rs 4.01 lakh.
They arrested nine people, including deputy commissioner Y Manjunath, inspectors Thammanna and Suzaina, guards Chowdanayaka, Eshwarappa, Umesha and Rajappa and clerks Nagesh and Nagaraj.
S Chandrashekar, president of Janata Bazaar, had complained to Lokayukta additional director general of police H Satyanarayan Rao in Bangalore recently that Manjunath had been demanding Rs 20 lakh to renew the licence of a retail liquor unit.
At around 1 pm on Wednesday, three teams of the Lokayukta police raided the main office of the excise deputy commissioner on 3rd Cross, Aniketana Road in Kuvempunagar, zone one and four in Nazarbad, and two and three in Gokulam.
The team led by deputy superintendent of police Purushottam recovered Rs 1.55 lakh in cash and 20 liquor bottles from the deputy commissioner’s office, and arrested Y Manjunath and clerk Nagaraj.
Another team led by deputy superintendent of police Jayaram recovered Rs 2.46 lakh in cash in Nazarbad and arrested inspectors Thammanna and Suzaina, guards Chowdanayaka, Eshwarappa, Umesha and Rajappa, and clerk Nagesh.
As many as six licences had been renewed in this office. However, the cops found no irregularities at the office in Gokulam.
The raid was supervised by Shivarama Reddy, Lokayukta superintendent of police,
Ramanagara, who also holds the additional charge of the Mysore district.
The case
Chandrashekar, also a wine merchant, had alleged that the excise deputy commissioner had demanded Rs 20 lakh to renew the licence of the retail sales unit of liquor at his bar.
He had also recorded the conversation with the officer, who had placed a demand for Rs 41,000 to renew each of the 360 licences of wine stores in Mysore district alone.
Chandrashekar, along with his friends set a trap, luring the officer with bulk renewal of licences. He also submitted a video CD to the Lokayukta top cop and released four copies to media in Mysore.
Chandrashekar claimed that deputy commissioner Y Manjunath had told him that he had to pay Rs 10,000 to Excise Minister M P Renukacharya alone for each licence, and keep Rs 25,000 for himself. The remaining amount was meant for office expenditure.
He alleged that the deputy commissioner demanded Rs 20 lakh to recover the money he had paid to remain in the post, cancelling his transfer to Bellary recently
