Researchers from the Transportation Research Institute at the University of Michigan used data supplied by the World Health Organization to determine where getting on the road is and is not a good idea.

The global average is 18 annual auto-related deaths per 100 thousand people.

In Namibia it’s more than double that at 45.

African countries in general didn’t fare well when it came to safe driving. Sudan, Swaziland, Republic of the Congo and Malawi all landed in the top 10.

Others in the top spots included Thailand at number 2, Iran at 3, and Venezuela in the 6th spot.

The remaining two in the 10-most-dangerous category are the Dominican Republic and Iraq.

By comparison, the safest nations had as few car accident fatalities as low as 2 per 100 thousand.

That honor goes to the Maldives, but keep in mind the whole country only has a population of about 400 thousand.

The US came in just under the world average at 14, so, if you’re planning a long car ride, go for it, but do exercise caution.
