Anti-government protesters and riot police are in wait-and-see mode as they face each other on Kiev’s Independence Square after a night of violence in which more than 20 people were killed.
After a night of petrol bombs and gunfire, anti-government protesters defended on Wednesday afternoon the parts of Kiev’s Independence Square they hadn’t lost the night before.
European Union leaders condemned what they called “the unjustified use of excessive force” and said they were urgently preparing targeted sanctions against those responsible for the crackdown.
