Michael Schumacher was in critical condition after undergoing brain surgery following a skiing accident in the French Alps on Sunday, doctors said.
Jean-Marc Grenier, Assistant Director of Grenoble University Hospital Centre, confirmed that the former Formula One driver was in a serious condition during a news conference outside the hospital's emergency ward.
"Mr. Michael Schumacher was admitted to Grenoble University Hospital Centre at 2:40 p.m after a skiing accident in Meribel in the late morning," Grenier said.
"He had suffered a serious trauma and was in a coma. Upon his arrival, a neurological intervention was necessary. He remains in critical condition," he added.
The retired driver, who won seven Driver's World Championships fell while skiing off-piste with his 14 year old son, and hit his head on a rock, according to a statement from the resort.
Resort managers said he had been wearing a helmet and was conscious when rescuers first responded to the scene.
Earlier in the day, the Meribel resort said Mr Schumacher had been taken to Grenoble for tests and authorities said his life was not in danger.
But the situation began to look more serious when the resort said that orthopaedic and trauma surgeon Gerard Saillant had travelled from Paris to the hospital to examine Schumacher.
A German news agency said it was Mr Saillant who operated on Mr Schumacher when he broke his leg during a crash at the Silverstone race course in 1999.
