Team GB secured its first gold medal of the Sochi Games on Friday when Lizzy Yarnold swept to victory in the skeleton.

Yarnold had been the favourite ahead of the event and produced a superb performance on the challenging track.

"I still can't believe it at all. I can't wait until the awards ceremony so that I can have the gold medal around my neck," Yarnold said on Saturday before the medal ceremony.

"When I crossed the finish line and I saw the number one, it was just the most amazing feeling. It was just relief, excitement, that is was all worth that hard work for five years and I'm just so proud that I could bring home the gold."

Yarnold didn't succumb to the pressure of being one of Britain's top gold medal hopes in Sochi, setting new course records on both her first and third runs, before cruising to victory by a substantial margin of over a second.

"You know, I don't really feel the pressure of people. I think I'm such a driven athlete, I have high expectations of myself. But I just focus in on the process of each run."

The 25-year-old from Kent only took up the sport in 2008 as part of the "Girls4Gold" initiative and follows 2010 gold medallist Amy Williams and 2006 silver medallist Shelley Rudman as British successes in the event.

But despite having accomplished her mission in Sochi, Yarnold said she expected to be sliding again at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

"Sochi was always my goal and my ambition, but I'll probably be in the gym next month, to be honest. I'm an athlete. I love to compete, so I'd love to defend my title."
