When you first come to live in Portugal you are not leaving a world behind, you're coming somewhere that's comfortably familiar and excitingly different at the same time.

For us this started as we left the airport. The kids were shouting out the names of brands advertised around us. You'd think they'd thought we were going to the moon, not a highly sophisticated 21st century European nation. We all felt like tourists on holiday, which was brilliant, because the Portuguese love visitors and made us feel very welcome ... even when they realised we were staying.

And now, we still have as much fun as tourists do -- perhaps more, because we've got to know a lot of the ins and outs. It's easy to build up a network of friends from both the local and expat communities, so you're always discovering something new.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that by coming to Portugal you are not losing anything. Instead you are gaining a whole new world. In fact, it's more like two whole new worlds ... and you can have the best of both of them!
