Two formerly jailed members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, Maria Alyokhina, 25, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 24, spoke during an Amnesty International press conference in New York on Tuesday (February 4).
Through a moderator, Alyokhina expressed her message for Americans: "I'd like for Americans to really look at Russia, and see Russia beyond the images of Olympic objects and buildings... The only thing which connects these objects to the country is taxpayer money which has been stolen, and which has been used to build up these Olympic objects," said Alyokhina.
In a message for President Obama, Tolokonnikova said, "This call and appeal is to not be afraid to publicly say your thoughts about what you feel is happening in Russia, once you are there during your next visit."
Amnesty announced that Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova would attend an Amnesty International concert on February 5th.
