Emaciated and weary, Jose Salvador Albarengo emerges from a patrol boat.

The fisherman, who can be seen helped by a male nurse, washed ashore in the Marshall Islands this weekend.

The 37 year-old says he spent more than a year adrift in the Pacific Ocean.

He apparently survived by catching fish and birds with his bare hands.

Thought to be from El Salvador, Albarengo told officials he set sail on a shark fishing trip from Mexico at the end of 2012...some 10,000 km away....but was blown off course.

He was found in a small fiberglass boat on a remote reef.

Albarengo set sail with another fisherman, but the teenager died a month into their ordeal.

After he walked down the gangplank Albarengo was whisked away to hospital for medical checks
