The 2014 State of the Union Address by Barack Obama was the most exciting public address by a standing American president to ever occur on Tuesday, January 28th, 2014. It will truly go down in history as having been the speech that Obama gave on that particular day. He touched on several incredible stats, such as the fact that America produced more oil domestically than it imported last year. Also, the Federal minimum wage is worth 20% less now than it was in 1981.
Nobody woke up until they heard the sound of a scuffle coming from the hallway, where the Republican Representative from Staten Island, Michael Grimm, was threatening to kill a NY1 reporter who pressed him on allegations that he took illegal campaign contributions. Grimm threatened to break the reporter in half and throw him off the balcony. Neither activities are considered part of a congressman's normal purview.
Overall, the president tried to sound upbeat about the prospect of making progress on many of the nation's stubborn problems. He promised to use executive orders to support law enforcement's efforts to confront gun violence nationwide, after a year of impotence by congress on the issue. Unfortunately, the nature of the two term limit means that Obama will be more and more isolated throughout the rest of his presidency, with congressmen of both parties needing his acquiescence less and less as his term draws to a close.
