A 48-year-old woman died a horrific and terrifying death on Thursday when her scarf got caught in a moving escalator in a subway station in Montreal, Canada.

The freak accident occurred around 9.15 a.m. at the Fabre Metro station on the city's blue line. Police believe shortly after stepping on to the descending escalator the woman's scarf became stuck. "While she was trying to pull up her scarf from the escalator, her hair got caught too and from there, everything got tied up at the end of the escalators," said Constable Jean-Pierre Brabant of the Montreal police.

Bassam Joubarani, a witness who saw the woman lying on the floor at the bottom of the escalator told the CBC the woman was breathing but unconscious. "Half her body [was] on the floor, and less than half her body was on the stairs," said Joubarani, adding that two people were trying to help her. "She was laying on her back ... Her face was normal colour and she was breathing, he said."

Responding to a call from a witness using a station emergency phone, paramedics and firefighters arrived to find the woman in cardiac arrest. Their attempts to revive her failed and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are treating the death as accidental but said they will review security camera footage to try to determine exactly the circumstances of the woman's death.

Bob Lamle, a spokesperson for the city's ambulance service told local media: ""We see accidents in escalators, but I don't recall a situation like this where somebody was physically trapped in the mechanism ... I've never seen anything quite like this."
