Black is quite unnecessary when painting landscapes - and mostly everything else. Keep this in mind when working on a painting, ditch the black. It can make your paintings appear flat and unrealistic - as black is quite rare in nature. Instead use rich, earthy purples, greens, browns and other colors as shadows and darks. Hope this helps :)
