BANGALORE: In what could be a bonus for movie buffs, the Karnataka government is planning to introduce uniform ticket rates at multiplexes on the lines of the system in Tamil Nadu.
Addressing members of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce in Bangalore on Tuesday, information minister R Roshan Baig took a dig at multiplexes for charging exorbitant rates and said, "If Tamil Nadu has a policy for the theatres, why can't we? We will stop this looting by the multiplexes.''
In Tamil Nadu, ticket prices are controlled by the government, with a cap on the maximum rate at Rs 120. Tickets for two front rows are sold at Rs 10.
There has been a move to subsequently revise the minimum ticket price depending on multiplexes that have a stipulated set of facilities that include digital sound system, generator backup for air-conditioning, food court, etc.
"If they don't accept our pricing policy, let them close the multiplexes and go,'' Baig said. The minister's proposal might need further consultation, but may not find favour with proprietors of multiplexes.
Referring to the problem of single window clearance for shooting of films, the minister directed N R Vishukumar, director, information department, who was present, to revive the system and open a helpline for the benefit of film-makers. "It is unfortunate that the producers and directors have to take permission from various departments for shooting in Karnataka. If they face any problem during the shooting, they can contact the helpline for advice. An officer will be posted there to attend these calls till 11 pm. This facility is available to movies made in other languages too.''
Baig said he was surprised that Bangalore does not have a film city like the ones in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai. "We should have a high tech film city run by professionals. I will also have talks with Fox Studios and Universal Studios on how they run them so we could equip our film city with the latest technology.''
