As Israel mourns the death of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, citizens are divided over his legacy.

The ex-military commander was a champion of expanding territory, and he was reviled for his harsh tactics against Palestinians.

But he stunned his own countrymen and the world in 2005 when he withdrew all Israeli settlers and troops from Gaza.

Some Israelis still resent this move.

"I am happy that he died...because he chased Jews out of their homes and he caused suffering."

Others appreciate his defense of Israel.
