Turkish MPs fight during parliament debate

Fighting broke out in the Turkish parliament on Saturday during a debate about a draft bill to give the ruling AK party more control over the judiciary.

The clash started after a judicial union rep presented a petition arguing the bill was unconstitutional, but the case was not put up for discussion.

Meanwhile tens of thousands of protesters called for Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan to step down.

Turkey is wrestling with a major corruption scandal after a secret police probe prompted party resignations and drove the lira currency to new lows.

Erdogan’s reaction, to tighten control over the police and courts, risks doing the deepest long-term damage to the country.
