To help clear up some of the confusion about what makes cats tick – and purr -animal expert John Bradshaw has written a book called ‘Cat Sense’ in which he lays down some truths about domestic felines.

Number 5. To them, you’re just another cat. They think highly of you, but they don’t regard humans the way that dogs do. That’s likely because cats are not naturally pack animals used to having a leader. As far as they’re concerned, you’re equals.

Number 4. Cats haven’t changed. Ever. Domestic felines have never been bred to perform specific tasks, so they remain pretty much the way they were thousands of years ago.

Number 3. Most kittens are fathered by unfriendly feral cats. As most housecats are neutered, mating options are limited. This is another reason cats have stayed close to their wild roots.

Number 2. They bring dead things into the house because they’re hunters looking for a safe place to consume their prey. Then they drop them on the floor and leave them because once inside, cats remember that their indoor food tastes better.

Number 1.In the absence of live prey, they’ll hunt anything that looks the part. They’re hardwired to capture things, so if all that’s available is a pair of socks, they’ll just go after that.
