North Korea opened a large new ski resort on New Year’s Eve, following controversy over Switzerland’s refusal to allow the export of ski lifts to the socialist state.
The ski resort project has been highlighted by North Korea for months as a major construction effort closely linked to its leader Kim Jong Un.
North Korea’s Ski Association estimates that there are about 5,500 skiers out of a population of approximately 24 million, meaning just 0.02 percent of North Koreans are established skiers.
The resort has one hotel for foreigners, which can accommodate up to 200 guests.
