Here’s some marital advice you probably never saw coming – make sure you and your spouse have the same alcohol consumption habits.

A study revealed that be they the lives of the party or teetotalers, couples that drank the same amount stayed married longer.

Researchers kept tabs on some duos and their drinking for 9 years.

Over that time they found that couples with dissimilar attitudes towards liquor ended up heading for divorce court 50 percent of the time.

Among those that shared a more similar point of view on imbibing the break-up rate was only 30 percent.

The study’s author noted that there are a couple of valuable lessons in their findings.

One is the emphasis they place on the importance of socializing together.

He noted that people who have vastly different drinking habits are less likely to go out on the town with one another, and doing things together is indicative of a couple’s compatibility.

The author also pointed out that the research carries an important lesson for addiction counselors.

He feels that the study’s results show that treating both the person abusing alcohol and their spouse could be valuable.
