As the EU closes in on enforcing its proposed ban on excessive cinnamon use, Danish bakers are fearful for the future of one of their traditional holiday pastries.

The prohibition on baking with large quantities of the spice is due to a natural toxin that exists in one of its most common sources. Overconsumption of that toxin has been linked to liver problems.

Cinnamon won’t go away in the EU, but baked goods that exceed an established limit will become illegal to sell.

Unfortunately for Danish bakers, one of their signature pastries far exceeds the allotted cap - the Christmas danish.

Sweden has gotten around the issue by declaring their version of baked, cinnamon-laden goodness a ‘traditional and seasonal dish’.

Denmark, on the other hand, chose not to pursue that option and now must face the fact that a big piece of their 200-year old culinary tradition could be coming to an end.

The United Kingdom is not enforcing the EU legislation, with one political party representative pointing out, "An average person would have to eat so many Danish pastries in order to be effected, they would certainly die of obesity before being hurt by a low level of cinnamon."
