The Yutu, or Jade Rabbit lunar rover is China’s first time landing on the moon, and the first soft landing on the moon’s surface since the former Soviet Union sent their Luna 24 mission there in 1976.
China’s Chang’e 3 mission, which includes the Jade Rabbit rover is named after characters in Chinese legend that travel to the moon.
NASA scientists operating the LRO have reportedly added the Jade Rabbit as a target for observation, to see how it affects the surface of the moon.
The Yutu Rover has started its three month mission to gather data using radar and x-rays to see under the surface of the moon at depths of up to around 330 feet, along with a panoramic camera to capture images and send them back to scientists in China.
