If you thought acting rude in France would make you appear more local, you'd be mistaken.

At one French café, being polite will not only give you a warm, fuzzy feeling, it’ll get you a lower price on a cup of hot, steamy coffee.

Overrun and a bit fed up with lunchtime customers who walked up to the counter and just barked the word ‘coffee’ at the staff, the owner decided to establish a new policy.

Now, as outlined on a blackboard outside of the establishment, if a person fails to ask politely, the drink will cost them over 12 dollars.

Saying ‘please’ drops the cost to 5.50. Add on a heartfelt bonjour and price falls to 2 bucks.

The politeness policy has gained quite a few fans, with a snapshot of the blackboard going viral on Twitter and the story behind it getting tens of thousands of likes on a local newspaper’s website.

Customers seem to appreciate is too, as, according to the owner, "Most of my customers are regulars and they just see the funny side and exaggerate their politeness. But people are more relaxed now, and they're smiling more. That's the most important thing."
