This was where Nelson Mandela spent his last 14 months of incarceration -- the Victor Verster prison in Paarl, just outside Cape Town.
On Monday, Leaders of the African National Congress party paid tribute to Mandela by visiting the prison.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS PARTY SECRETARY GENERAL, GWEDE MANTASHE, SAYING:
"A journey to freedom. Though Mandela wrote 'A Long Walk to Freedom,' I always go and look at it biblically, that the 40 years of a journey to the land of promise means that there were difficult moments and difficult times, and this is but one example."
From 1988, Mandela was living in a private cottage inside the prison, after being in and out of hospital, for tuberculosis treatment.
He stayed here until his historic release in February 11, 1990.
