Considered the world’s first electrically powered helicopter with twin seats, the e-volocopter has several small rotors in place of the standard one rotor with blades.

Technology is constantly evolving making the once impossible now quite real. The world’s first electric helicopter recently demonstrated its inaugural flight inside a large German hangar.

This special event took place on November 17th of this year, with the twin seat electric helicopter piloted remotely by ground staff.

Called the e-volocopter it has several small rotors in place of the standard one rotor with blades. The company behind the aircraft, E-Volo noted “Volocopter is a revolution in aviation Made in Germany. Safer, simpler, and cleaner than normal helicopters, it has a unique way of moving – a groundbreaking innovation. The Volocopter is an environmentally friendly and emission- free private helicopter.”

The rotors which are much like the ones used on radio controlled ‘quadcopters’, are the key to the electric chopper. The recent and successful flight lasted about 20 minutes.

Production on the helicopters will reportedly begin within the next several years. According to the e-volo team, the chopper received a Grade A when it came to performance with smooth takeoffs and landings, no significant vibrations and an exceptionally quiet operating sound.
