STORY: Hundreds of Thai office workers join rallies in their lunch break, showing their solidarity with protesters.

The protesters and leaders of the opposition Democrat party are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

They marched to the U.S. embassy to hand over a letter explaining their demands.

The protesters say Yingluck's government is controlled by her brother -- the ousted former leader Thaksin Shinawatra who they claim is corrupt.

They accuse her of using her party's majority to push for laws that many say would have allowed the return of Thaksin, without having to serve jail.

On Thursday, protesters rejected Yingluck's call for dialogue, deepening a conflict that broadly pits the urban middle class against the mostly rural supporters of Thaksin, a divisive billionaire ousted in a 2006 military coup and central to Thailand's eight years of on-off turmoil.
