Pro-Europe protests in Ukraine
Protesters have renamed Kiev’s "Maidan Nezalezhnosti" or “Independence Square” “Euro Maidan”. Activists have set up tents there and have been camping out over the past few days, a highly symbolic place, this square was the epicenter of the 2004 Orange Revolution. Demonstrators are protesting the government decision, made under pressure from Russia, to scrap plans to sign an agreement that would have strengthened ties with the European Union.
The movement has been widely coordinated via social networks, and a site has been set up to post and share messages and pictures sent in from some of the tens of thousands of protesters who have been joining demonstrations since last Friday, urging the government to build closer ties with Europe.
Some posts bear witness to the clashes with riot police, notably when protesters tried to block entry to the government building in Kiev.
And rallies are also taking place outside of the Ukrainian capital. One activist has set up an interactive map to visualize demonstrations taking place across the country, and the rest of the world. Paris, Rome, Vienna, Ukrainians living abroad have also taken to the streets over the past few days, to show their support for this pro –European movement.
