Some artists work hard to not only create something beautiful, but also send an important message. That’s exactly what Chris Maynard does.

Specializing in bird feathers, Maynard has a sort of obsession. He collects feathers from various types of birds from zoos and private aviaries.

Maynard cuts out and crafts intricate birds shapes from the boldly colored feathers. It appears as though groups of tiny birds are flying away; their shapes left as gaping openings in the feather, making it very clear where they came from.

Maynard claims to use magnifying glasses and ophthalmology tools given to him by his family, to make sure the birds are precisely cut from the feather. He stated “I am pretty mathematical about it. I want each piece to be in the right place. I hope that seeing birds in a different light through my artwork will encourage appreciation of avian life and hence a desire to conserve it.”

Each one of his works is vastly different. Due to the contrasting vibrant coloring of the feathers and the bird species created from the cuts, it’s very clear vast amounts of time and passion go into each masterpiece.
