A picture of a Burger King sign that read ‘Now Hiring: Must Be Mexican” surfaced recently on the website of a Yakima, Washington radio station.

For large brands that hire thousands of employees, even one of them can do serious damage.

A picture of a Burger King sign that read ‘Now Hiring Must Be Mexican” surfaced recently on the website of a Yakima, Washington radio station.

The station’s management said that a digital media employee was responsible for putting up the image.

It turns out that when posting the picture, that employee made two errors. One was not verifying where or when it was taken and the other was inviting public commentary.

Apparently, significant information about the racist message was reported incorrectly.

Burger King HQ was swift to clarify the facts surrounding the sign by posting the following on their official Facebook page.

“The sign in question was posted briefly last summer…the franchise has informed us that the employee who posted and photographed the sign was immediately terminated as a result.”

As for the comments, responses were mixed.

One person gave the sign writer a little leeway, proposing that perhaps instead of Mexican the person meant bilingual.

Others took the picture as a cue to remark on everything from language to immigration based their own attitudes.
