ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION
Japanese medical student Takahiro Nakanishi said he could not believe his eyes when he woke up and opened the door to his living room on Friday (November 8) morning as Typhoon Haiyan smashed into central Philippines.
Recording it on video briefly before returning to the safety of his bedroom, Nakanishi saw howling winds rip through the living room through shattered windows. Emerging a few hours later, he also recorded the damage from the winds.
He said when he looked through the windows, the whole city of Palo, adjacent to Tacloban city, had seemingly disappeared overnight.
Nakanishi, a 24-year-old medical student from Mie University, was due to finish his training in community medicine at the local hospital in Palo when Haiyan hit.
Worried about the aftermath, he fled the city to the closest port with a ship that took him to the island of Cebu, where he is currently staying.
He said he witnessed crowds scavenging fo
