Art therapy is geared towards emotionally suffering soldiers and its gaining in popularity.

There are some lesser known, but very effective forms of therapy out there. One unconventional treatment, geared towards soldiers with brain injuries, is being used increasingly.

In the Creative Arts Therapy Program, drawing and writing activities along with visual arts are used to help heal soldiers and veterans with brain injuries and psychological disorders.

The program has been gaining in popularity due to its effectiveness and it is now being used in the military hospital at Fort Belvoir, located in Virginia. The program is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Department of Defense, and has proved successful in the past.

It originated just last year at Maryland’s Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Over 200 patients are scheduled to take part in the art treatment at the Virginia facility.

It is expected to last three months on a preliminary pilot basis. Patients who have undergone the therapy show signs that they have learned to regulate mood swings and distance themselves from the traumatic events that haunt them.
