In an important development, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Wednesday that his state government is considering extending the “Shaadi Bhagya “ scheme to all communities and not restrict it to the minorities.

Speaking to media persons, the CM said: “Everybody has the right to protest in a democracy, so has Yeddyurappa. I will not ask him to reconsider his decision to protest”. He added, “ Yeddyurappa was present when the budget was presented in the assembly. Why did he not object then? Why did he not make suggestions? He is trying to take political advantage now,” he said referring to the protest launched by the former CM in Bengaluru seeking the extension of Shaadi Bhagya to the Hindu community.

“Why couldn’t Yeddyurappa take up such schemes for the poor and needy when he was Chief Minister?” Siddaramaiah wondered. Taking strong objection to the charge that his government was playing votebank politics through the Shaadi Bhagya scheme for Muslim women, Siddaramaiah said it was intended to help people of all minority communities and not just Muslims.

Earlier, the CM told reporters before launching developmental projects that the opposition, especially KJP led by Yeddyurappa was trying to confuse people by spreading falsehood. “Their protests and propaganda are politically motivated. When my government is trying help poor girls of minority communities , I don’t understand why Yeddyurappa is upset,” he said, advising opposition parties to appreciate the good work done by his government and give constructive criticism when called for, instead of attacking it on all fronts.

Under the scheme the government intends to give Rs 50,000 in cash as a wedding gift to girls from minority communities if their family income is less than Rs 1.5 lakh a year. Yeddyurappa has protested against the scheme claiming it can cause disharmony in society. On the long awaited appointment of chairmen of state run boards and corporations, Siddaramaiah said he would make the announcements after holding consultations with KPCC chief Dr G. Parameshwar.

The Chief Minister later launched projects worth Rs 110 crore in the district.
