A speed boat collision off the coast of Pattaya, Thailand, on Sunday left 18 South Korean tourists injured, six badly.
The group of 28 tourists and guides boarded a speed boat at a Pattaya beach and were headed to Koh Laan island on a snorkeling day-trip.
Initial reports suggest that on approach to Koh Laan's Tawan beach, the vessel collided with a stationary speedboat about 800m from shore, throwing several people overboard, including two men who were struck by propellers. The captain of the passenger boat, Rungaroon Hormlamduan, 27, and the captain of the stationary boat, Amnaj Jarentap, 42, then fled the scene. Police are seeking both men.
Two men suffered critical injuries: 51-year-old Myung Bae Kim, whose legs were nearly severed, and Gihwa Hong, 64, whose left leg was severed below the knee.
Tourists regularly complain about the skills and reckless attitude toward safety of speed boat operators in Pattaya and Phuket.
