Arizona man Josh Goverman loses finger trying to steal copper wire

Views 3

A careless criminal accidentally cut off his own a finger while trying to steal coils of copper wire from an air conditioning repair truck on October 7 in Glendale, Arizona. Police used the severed finger left at the crime scene to make a fingerprint which pointed investigators to 29-year-old Josh Goverman.

It is believed that Goverman stole wire off of Bill Bratcher's Champion Air air conditioning repair truck which was parked in front Bratcher's Glendale home. Evidence suggests that Goverman grabbed a bunch of wire off the truck, then pulled it into his car. Somewhere down the line, Goverman got the ring finger on his left hand wrapped up in the wire, but maybe didn't realize it until he started driving away. That same wire wrapped around his finger was also stuck under one of the tires on Bratcher's truck and when Goverman sped off, the wire snapped off his finger.

Bratcher got up the next morning to find red, green and black wire strung about and he followed a line to the sidewalk about 20 feet away. At the end of the line was Goverman's finger tip.

Police took the severed digit, stuck it on a popsicle stick (the details of how this was done were not available) and rolled in ink for a print. A viable fingerprint was made and police were able to trace it to Goverman. It was not explained how police were able to make the match and it was not reported if Goverman already had a criminal record.

About a week after Bratcher found the finger, police caught up with Goverman, according to a report by television channel CBS5 AZ. Goverman was indeed missing a finger when the police found him and he was taken into custody. Police also found that Goverman had posted several graphic photographs depicting the bloody cut-off finger stump on his left hand. On his Facebook profile, however, he claimed to have lost the digit in an accident with a fan belt while helping a friend with his car. He told this same story to police, until they brought out his fingertip on ice.

Goverman has been charged with a misdemeanor count of theft. Police say he is welcome to take his finger back, should he desire it.
