Twenty-nine baggage handlers were arrested after cameras caught them damaging and stealing from luggage at several Italian airports, Italian media reported.
The investigation began in 2011 and involved eight airports across the country; Milan, Rome, Bari, Palermo, Lamezia Terme, Verona, Bologna and Napoli.
The robberies were carried out in the cargo holds of airplanes during loading and unloading times.
According to reports, the suspects would enter a plane's cargo hold, open luggage, sometimes forcing and breaking it, and take valuable items such as cameras and mobile phones.
The suspects face up to six years in prison. Another 57 workers are being questioned by police, according to Italian media.
Among these people, 47 were employees of Alitalia-Cai flight company, which collaborated with police on the investigation, Ansa reported.
