China says five detained in connection with Tiananmen attack

Monday's fiery car crash in Beijing's Tiananmen Square that left five people dead was a terror attack.

That's according to Chinese state media which made the announcement on Wednesday.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) UNNAMED CCTV NEWSREADER, SAYING:

"Police had determined the incident that had occurred on October 28 was a tightly planned, organized and premeditated violent case of terrorist attack."

Chinese police say the SUV involved in the crash was driven by Usmen Hasan.

They say his wife and mother were also in the car.

Their names suggest they could be ethnic Uighurs -- Muslims from the restive Xinjiang region bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) UNNAMED CCTV NEWSREADER, SAYING:

"Police found there was gasoline, a gasoline container, two machetes and iron rods inside the car. They also found flags bearing extremist religious content on them inside the car."
