A man in Golden Valley, Arizona has been accused of using Craigslist to advertise and subsequently sell a home which he did not own. 35-year-old John David Seiberling is now facing felony charges relating to fraud.

When putting a house on the market, you'd expect a seller to list a home they actually own - right? Don't be so sure.

A man in Golden Valley, Arizona has been accused of using Craigslist to advertise and subsequently sell a property that wasn’t even his. 35-year-old John David Seiberling is now facing felony charges relating to fraud.

The scheme was brought to the attention of local authorities after the victim, a 58-year-old woman came forward and said that she and her husband put up $3,000 as a down payment on a private residence as part of a lease-to-own deal that they made with Seiberling.

When the couple, who lived out of state of the time of the arrangement, arrived in Golden Valley to take possession of the house, they realized the keys did not work. They began calling Seiberling repeatedly, but never got a response.

The actual owner of the home spoke to the couple and told them that Seiberling, who had been leasing the home, had absolutely no authority to change that lease. Deputies quickly began searching for Seiberling.

They eventually found him at the same residence he had sold to the couple. According to police, Seiberling admitted to conducting the Craigslist scam.
