Denmark is set to begin work on an undersea road and rail tunnel across the Fehmarn Belt strait to Germany. The project is slated for completion in 2020.

Nine identical reinforced concrete segments will be joined to form a single tunnel section. The tunnel will consist of of 89 such sections.

Finished tunnel elements will be moved to a dry dock which will then be flooded with seawater. Tug boats will be used to move the floating tunnel sections towards pre-dug seabed trenches.

Pontoons will then be attached and the elements lowered to the seabed, 40 meters beneath the surface.

The 18 km-long undersea tunnel will be the world's longest tunnel of its kind as well as the longest combined rail and road tunnel.
