A new apartment owner was surprised when he realized the previous tenant of his flat in the Bussy-Saint-Georges suburb outside of Paris hadn't actually moved out yet. The new owner had bought the apartment in an auction after it was repossessed by the bank, as the previous tenant had not been paying his mortgage or building fees. Apparently, no one had actually bothered to check the apartment before auctioning it off, because when the new owner required the assistance of a locksmith in order to enter the flat, and when he did, he found the mummified body of the previous tenant hanging from a bed sheet.
The body had been there for about eight years, and it belonged to a roughly 40-year-old Cambodian man who was formerly a security guard. No one had heard from him since he filed a complaint for being fired from his job in 2005, and he had severed ties with his family years before that.
What was remarkable about the situation wasn't that the neighbors hadn't realized there was a dead man hanging in the apartment next door for years, nor was it because no one had actually checked the apartment before auctioning it off — it was because the body was found in perfect condition, even after hanging there for at least 8 years.
Investigators don't know what to make of the phenomenon, but they're looking into it.
