Swansea University has banned a fitness class that promotes pole dancing because the activity treats women as 'sexual objects' and bolsters 'sexist attitudes'.
The Swansea Student Pole Fitness Society offered twice weekly classes to promote exercise. But the student union expressed concerns that the concept of pole fitness was linked to the rise of so-called 'Raunch Culture'.
According to student paper The Waterfront, the student union board stated: "Pole fitness and pole dancing are a direct spin off from lap dancing."
In a statement, the trustee board said: "Activities such as pole fitness contributes to an atmosphere where women are viewed as sexual objects and where violence against them is acceptable."
The union unanimously decided that the society should cease to exist because the sport is 'inextricably linked to the multimillion pound sex industry'.
President of the pole fitness committee, Beth Morris, told the Daily Mail that the decision was 'highly, highly offensive'.
She said: "Lap dancing occurs in gentleman's clubs. Pole fitness is strictly for fitness."
A campaign has been set up to try and get the decision changed by the Student Union's board.
