The global arms trade is worth an estimated 80 billion dollars. In September, Italy became the first EU state to ratify the UN's Arms Trade Treaty, which is intended to stop weapons supplies to countries at war or that abuse human rights. Each year an estimated 500,000 people die as a result of armed violence. The UN's annual disarmament week runs until October 25.VIDEOGRAPHIC
