The magnitude 7.2 quake dealt severe damage on Tuesday (October 15) in Bohol and Cebu Islands, known popular tourist destinations in the central Philippines.
Officials reported several low-rise buildings had collapsed, as well as damages to government offices, churches and tourist attractions.
Residents ran from their homes in Cebu city, about 570 km (660 miles) southeast of the capital, Manila, and hospitals moved patients to open spaces as aftershocks rocked the city of about 870,000 people.
At least 159 people suffered injuries and were sent to nearby hospitals for treatment during the quake, officials said.
