A team led by G C Prakash, the Bangalore Urban deputy commissioner, raided illegal quarries around the City on Tuesday. Cases were booked against the owners of the quarries, who had reduced a number of hillocks to quarries several hundred feet deep.

The team stopped extraction of stone at a quarry spread across 117 acres at Bettada Halasuru. During the raids, it came to light that 30 out of the 33 quarry firms had not got their licences renewed, even after their expiry several years ago.

Prakash told Deccan Herald, “Thirty companies that have taken 91 licences for different purposes and also for mining activities in other places had not bothered to get them renewed, but continued quarrying.”

The deputy commissioner said there were instances of children falling in the quarries, some of which were dug as deep as 200 ft to 300 ft. “The firms were even blasting stones at night, which is illegal. It endangered the lives of people in nearby localities,” he said.

The team seized 6.75 lakh tonnes of gravel and boulders worth Rs 67 crore. It also seized quarrying machines

Suresh, deputy commissioner of police, North East division, officials of the Mines and Geology department and senior officers of the district administration were part of the raid team.

Prakash had recently launched a crackdown against landgrabbers in Anekal taluk and seized government properties worth crores of rupees. He had also got encroachers evicted from lake beds and a gomala land in Yeshwantpur hobli a week ago.

He had also launched a crackdown against people employing child labourers and freed many children working as bonded labourers in incense stick factories on Avenue Road.
