3D thriller "Gravity" has a successful lift-off at US and Canadian box offices with about $55.6 million in ticket sales.

That's a record for the month of October, taking ticket sales to new heights, and wowing critics with its special effects. The movie is about stranded astronauts floating through space, and stars Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

And last weekend's hit, the animated "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2," is still popular with moviegoers, bringing in $21.5 million.

Third in this weekend's competition ---- "Runner Runner" with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake. It explores the murky world of online gambling, and brought in $7.6 million, according to studio estimates.
