A man is in critical condition after apparently setting himself on fire at the National Mall in Washington.

Several joggers rushed to extinguish the flames engulfing 80 percent of his body. No reason has been established for the self-immolation.

The incident has America on edge as it comes just one day after a woman was shot dead at nearby Capitol Hill following a car chase.
