Pope Francis arrives in Assisi, the central Italian hilltown where St. Francis, the saint venerated for his simplicity, poverty and love of nature, lived in the 12th century.

After arriving by helicopter, the pope greeted sick and disabled people cared for by the Serafico Institute, a religious charitable institution.

The pontiff visited the tomb of Saint Clare of Assisi, one of the founders of the Poor Clares religious order for women.

Saint Clare, who died in Assisi in 1253, was one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi and, taking his example, determined to live a life of absolute poverty and renounce all property.

Pope Francis also prayed at the tomb of St. Francis and celebrated Mass in Piazza San Francesco (St. Francis Square).
