Jellyfish invasion shuts down nuclear power plant in Sweden

An invasion of fearsome, spineless, gooey jellyfish managed to force the shutdown of Sweden's largest nuclear power plant earlier this week.

A swarm of Aurelia aurita, or moon jellyfish, attacked one of the reactors at Oskarshamn nuclear plant, which sits on the Baltic Sea coast in southeastern Sweden, causing a three-day outage.

In an incident that the New York Times said evoked "B-grade sci-fi movie plots from the 1950s," the saucer-shaped sea animals deviously clogged the pipes that conduct cool water to the turbines of the complex's 1,400-megawatt Unit 3.

"The operations management at unit O3 chose to disconnect the facility from the grid at noon on Sunday due to a large amount of jellyfish present at the cooling water intake," said a statement by Oskarshamns Kraftgrupp AB, the company that operates the plant, according to a CNN report. "This decision is a preventive safety measure in order for the unit to not be automatically shut down due to too-low cooling in the condenser."

Engineers managed to clear the no doubt slimy pipes, and Oskarhamn Unit 3
was back to being fully operational on Wednesday.

According to the plant's operator, however, the multi-tentacled menace persists!

"We hope we have solved the problem regarding the jellyfish, but we are not sure because they can come back," Anders Osterberg, a spokesman for the operator told the New York Times.

They're not resting on their laurels, though, and have amply prepared themselves in the event of a second strike once the jellyfish regroup, alter their strategy and go back on the offense.

"Furthermore we have reinforced our clearing system to deal with any future jellyfish invasions," the outlets quoted OKG as saying in a statement.
