An Australian firm has launched what it calls shark-repellant wetsuits. The technology is based on the recent discovery that sharks are colorblind, meaning they cannot detect red or green hues in their vision. Two suits have been designed — a blue "Elude" suit and a black and white striped "Diverter" suit. The "Elude" wetsuit is designed to mimic natural light patterns in the water column which, coupled with the shark's colorblindness, camouflages the diver or snorkeler wearing the suit. The "Diverter" wetsuit is based on naturally occurring patterns found on poisonous plants and animals in a marine environment. The "Diverter" series includes black and white striped stickers for the underneath of surfboards and watersports equipment. The wetsuits will be available commercially, subsequent to further testing.
